A novel

Pre-Paid — a novel by Brandan Kraft. A man drapes his jacket over a young woman in the rain; one warm light glows across the park.

the dark is where the story starts

My next book is a novel. A love story. And before you ask — yes, I mean it, and no, I haven't changed lanes. I've just changed tools.

Josie is twenty-three, and she is very good at her job. Her job is being wanted by strangers, one hour at a time, for money that was never really hers, under a name that was never really hers, in a life she watches from somewhere near the ceiling. Then one night she gets sent, already paid for, to the wrong kind of man — a man who will not take what was bought, and cannot seem to stop wanting the one thing that was never for sale: her.

Pre-Paid is about what happens to a person who has been priced by everyone and treasured by no one when somebody finally pays attention instead of money. It's about shame, and what actually gets a stain out. It's about whether a woman who has spent five years becoming a product can ever get to be a person again — and who exactly foots that bill.

If you read A Thought in the Mind of God, you already know what I believe: that your story has an Author, that He wastes no chapter of it, and that the ones He loves get loved from before the first page. This novel is that book with a face on it. Everything I argued there, Josie lives here. I gave you the blueprint. Now I want to show you the house with the lights on.

It is honest about the dark — the dark is where the story starts, and I don't pretend otherwise. But it goes somewhere. All the way home, in fact.
